FAQ

How long is the drive from Prague?

About 45 minutes each way, roughly 30 km southwest of Prague. It's our closest destination — you can have a relaxed start and still be back in Prague with the afternoon to spare.

Do we need to book the castle tour in advance?

For the standard tour (Tour 1) you usually don't need to book as an individual. But if you want to see the famous Chapel of the Holy Cross (Tour 2), booking ahead is required and spots are limited. Let us know what you'd like and we'll help you plan the timing. You can check tours on the castle's official website.

Is there a walk up to the castle?

Yes — the village is a pedestrian zone, so there's a 20–30 minute walk uphill from the parking area to the castle gates. It's scenic, lined with shops and cafés, but good shoes help. There's also a shuttle or horse-drawn carriage if you'd prefer to ride up.

Where do we have lunch?

Karlštejn village has several restaurants along the path up to the castle, serving traditional Czech food with castle views. A couple of options:

- Restaurace U Janů — traditional Czech dishes with a terrace, on the way up to the castle. See on Google Maps.

- Restaurace Koruna — hearty Czech meals on the main street up to the castle. See on Google Maps.

Lunch isn't included in the price and usually runs €10–20 per person. Want us to help you book a table? Just ask.

Is Karlštejn good for kids?

Yes — kids love the castle and the walk up through the village feels like an adventure. The interior tours involve a lot of stairs, so a baby carrier works better than a stroller. Note that our car isn't fitted with child seats — bring your own if needed and we'll help install it.

Can we combine Karlštejn with something else?

Yes — because it's so close, Karlštejn pairs well with a stop nearby, such as the Koněprusy Caves or the "Great America" flooded quarry with its turquoise water. Adding a stop is easy and doesn't change the fixed price, as long as it fits the day. Just ask in advance.
